Well, this year certainly zipped by! Although I spent much of it glued to my desk, writing, I also spent a fair amount of time walking and taking photos, and I was able to take two wonderful trips to places that I’d never seen: one to Yellowstone National Park, and one to New York City. The first was a family reunion and was great fun, except for one thing: turns out I’m too old for the tent/sleeping bag experience, especially when the nights (in mid-July!) dip into the 30s! But, other than waking up as a cripple every morning, I had a great time.
The NYC trip was also great fun as I tried, and usually succeeded, in keeping up with my indefatigable daughters.
Here are a few of my favorite photos from this last year.I hope everyone who reads this has a happy new year, filled with love, laughter, and beauty.

Some wonderful shots here! Really feeling that first pic of the fall foliage. Very nice!

Thanks! We lucked out that day and stumbled onto the most incredible light.

Would you tell us what camera you used for the scenic photos? My little digital doesn’t do as well as whatever you use. Thanks!

Sandra, I used a Canon T3i DSLR with the wonderful “nifty fifty” Canon 50 mm lens, which is a prime lens, meaning it doesn’t zoom, but is amazingly sharp. There are point and shoots that can come close to a DSLR in quality, but they tend to be in the $600–$1000 range. That said, I take a lot of lousy photos with all of my cameras. The more you can understand what your camera and lens can do in specific lighting situations, the better chance you have of getting photos you like. And, as a photography teacher once told me, “The secret to being a good photographer is to throw away your mistakes.” 🙂
